Bunny Chow

I know some people in America have eaten the snack "puppy chow" made out of Chex cereal, but have you ever heard of eating "bunny chow"?
It tastes better than Jim's face portrays
Bunny Chow
Bunny chow is a local, inexpensive menu item that originated  from Durban, South Africa.  It is basically a half loaf of bread, with all its crust left on, that is hollowed out in the middle (leaving some bread around the edges), and then filled with a meat-based curry.

This meal - and the way it is served - was an adaptation made by Indian restaurants during Apartheid South Africa.  In the Apartheid era, it was illegal for Blacks to eat in the restaurants of Coloured people, including those of Indian descent.  Owners of Indian restaurants got around that by developing this food item that required no utensils to eat, and then sold it through a "walk-up" window so that their Black customers could be served without needing to technically come into the restaurant.

I have eaten bunny chow several times.  It's messy, but tastes great!  And, at less than $2 US, it is quite a bargain.
