After leaving Port Elizabeth, Jim and I met up with our friends, Cheryl Larson and John Mallo, for a trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana. Our first stop: Victoria Falls!

The smoke that thunders |
|
It's considered lucky to see a rainbow in the mist.
We saw a double! |
The local name for Victoria Falls is Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means literally, “
the
smoke that thunders.”
Africa's fourth longest, the Zambezi River flows flat and wide until it gets to this stark 300 foot fall or drop, then swirls away in a very narrow channel. This produces a ton of "smoke" or mist.

At the middle of the bridge, we crossed into Zambia |
Jim and I first viewed the river from the bridge that crosses the river between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

View of the "smoke" from the Victoria Falls Hotel |
· Later, we viewed the falls from the terrace of the Victoria Falls Hotel - a beautiful old colonial hotel where you feel you have walked back in time a hundred years.
Our last view of the falls was from a "bird's eye" view.

The Zambezi is flat and wide until this sudden 300 foot
drop at Victoria Falls. Stunning! |
