Not Your Typical Classroom: Sacramento Trail

Mary West takes the lead...
On Wednesday afternoon before we left for Cape Town (March 28), Mary West – our diminutive, but insightful South African Literature instructor - held a different kind of class.  All her students, Mark and Beth, and Matt Dummer’s parents were invited out to her home.  Our Langerry residence looks eastward to the Indian Ocean.  Mary's home is along the southern shoreline of Port Elizabeth.

Joe points the way...
With Mary in the lead, we trekked along the Sacramento Trail to Sardinia Bay.  Jim and I had not walked this trail previously.  It was beautiful!

Halfway through the hike, we paused while two separate student groups led us in discussions of a documentary about South Africa – A Country Imagined with Johnny Clegg.  Holding this class time on the sandy and rocky shoreline of the Indian Ocean was one more example of St. John’s and St. Ben’s “global education.”
Trang and Kelcey like Sardinia Bay.
